Zapatero welcomes the European champions in La Moncloa
9/22/2009 The Spanish National Team and representatives of the FEB arrived last Monday in Madrid on a charter flight from Katowice. At 13:00, the group attended an official reception at the Palacio de la Moncloa held by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, President of Spain.
Zapatero said that he was "extremely proud" of a team that made history when they proclaimed themselves as European Champions in Poland, highlighted the compromise of Pau Gasol, and thanked the team “for being here after the competition and for all your effort, we are extremely proud of you”. The delegation of the national team was led by its President José Luis Sáez, and the Secretary of State for Sport, Jaime Lissavetzky.
The President also made a special mention to one of the team´s member: "a person as exceptional as Pau Gasol. I appreciate your commitment to Spain and, without a doubt, your positive contribution to our country". Zapatero finished by remarking the golden moment of Spanish sports: “we have the best basketball players, cyclists, tennis players ...” “One feels proud to be Spanish and President of Spain and to see how you carry our flag all over the world. We hope that the London Olympic Games continue the streak”.
