MONDAYS WITH THE PRESIDENT
Basketball United

New entry of José Luis Sáez, President of FEB.
A sport practiced around the world, with over a million licenses, promoting female athletes and model competitions worldwide – basketball is all of this and has the potential for being even more, but it requires a unified global vision.
It’s clear that for various historical, geographic and conceptual reasons, the NBA is a different world of basketball, regulated according to the specific sports structure in the United States, which is difficult to apply throughout the rest of the world. But the NBA clearly serves as a model for basketball, especially in the field of management, with its goal of achieving excellence, its responsiveness in solving problems, and above all, the ability to question almost everything – no matter how consolidated they may seem – with the objective of continuous growth.
Basketball is a game, a competition, a show, a passion... A way of life, as someone once said.
This global vision, which we all agree with, should help reenergize sports that occasionally have room for improvement in terms of certain specific issues. The FEB is still convinced that identity, identification and staying power are all essential values for recovering what this sport is currently missing. It’s not a coincidence that the National Teams are recognized for their power to bring people together in a way that is unparalleled in other competitions: the national teams’ bonus is their identity.
They are, therefore, important to reenergizing this sport, and we all agree. But basketball competitions should not rival each other: they are and should be complementary, provide feedback, and serve as the strongest components in a solid system, without creating any confusion. Reaching agreements is very probable when there is a consensus.
Basketball clearly cannot grow or develop if it is immersed in conflict and disagreement – we can only achieve our goals through balance and collaboration. The presence of the NBA in the FIBA’s new structure has provided maximum globalization for our sport, which was previously lacking.
This globality should reinforce all sports projects and competitions through the essential values of competitiveness and reaching the best sponsors, the media’s interest, and investing in the global promotion of our sport. This is the FIBA’s vision: reinforcing its structure through modernity and investing in long-term planning with a future vision that is essential to everyone’s growth.
Consequently, all our goals are attainable – including the goal of Basketball United.
