José Luis Sáez, President of the FEB, will be in Havana this week to attend the meeting of the Executive Committee of FIBA America, headed by Horacio Muratore. José Luis Sáez, who coincided in Cuba with Miguel Ángel Moratinos, Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, will use his presence on American soil to open new means of cooperation and to establish development programs with the top leaders of Cuban sports and basketball in that continent.
José Luis Sáez arrived in Havana as a guest with Patrick Baumann -FIBA America´s FIBA Secretary General and IOC member-, and Boris Stankovic, -Secretary General Emeritus-. FIBA America´s Executive Committee is composed by Horacio Muratore (President, Argentina), Jim Tooley (Vice President, USA), George Killian (Treasurer, United States), Alberto Garcia (General Secretary, Argentina), Rick Bring (former President, Canada ) and Genaro Marchand (Secretary General Emeritus, Puerto Rico).
The President of the FEB will hold several meetings in Havana, both with top Cuban sports officials and major leaders of the different American conferences of the international federation. Last Sunday, he met with a representative committee of the Cuban Federation and the President of the Central Zone of FIBA Americas, the legendary former Cuban player Ruperto Herrera.
Sáez: "A great relationship"
Through these personal contacts, Sáez has established the foundation for developing personalized plans of cooperation. "International cooperation is one of the cornerstones of our plan for the 2014 FIBA World Championship", said the president of the FEB, and added that “we are fully open to FIBA America, with whom we share a great historical relationship”. About his contacts with Cuban leaders, which will continue in the upcoming days, Sáez said that "Cuba has always been one of the American countries with more tradition in our sport, in the FEB we are very excited to be involved with them regaining a position of primacy in American basketball”.
The presence of José Luis Sáez in Havana coincides with the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Miguel Angel Moratinos, who officially meet on Monday with a senior government delegation from Cuba. Moratinos reassured that his second visit to Cuba "is no longer controversial but normal", and declared that "its main goal is to strengthen relations” with this country within the "new politics" established with the island under the government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.
